'I was honestly stunned': Flight passenger meets entitled family who try to give their child her seat

This woman tried to ask a family to give her her assigned seat on a plane

But what they did instead is very odd! 

There's no end to the travel mishaps you'll witness while you're on a flight, and a lot of them stem from people getting confused (or entitled) about their seating arrangement. 

Like, some people will purposefully choose the aisle seat while booking, but then they'll demand the window seat once they board. Or they'll bring along such a large carry on bag that it can't fit in, and then they throw a fit when they have to pay for it to be stowed in the luggage compartment. 

And, in this person's case, she tried to sit in her assigned seat, only to find that a child was sat there instead.

  • I always hear stories about people acting entitled on flights, like seats are just... suggestions. Today happens to be the first time I actually watched it happen in real life.

  • I was already seated when a family came in and took the row next to me. They had booked the middle and the aisle, but somehow managed to spread across all 3 seats by putting their "lap child" in the window seat.

    Ah yes… the concept of a "lap child." Airlines do offer this for very young babies, the ones who couldn't sit up in a seat even if they tried. But they're usually quite strict with the cutoff age for this, and anyone who isn't a newborn baby is gonna need to sit down and buckle up like every other passenger.

  • I remember thinking, okay... this should be interesting when the actual seat owner shows up. Sure enough, a few minutes later, a woman came down the aisle, checked her ticket, and stopped right there.

    Were they just very dedicated to the cause of not moving an inch? It'd be funny if it wasn't so odd, and, if we're being real, antisocial.

    No shifting, no standing up, no "sorry about that." Just sat there like the situation might somehow resolve itself without effort.

  • Why wouldn't the flight attendant stick her head in and get the kid off the seat?

    It got quiet in that awkward, secondhand- embarrassment kind of way. A flight attendant even came over to see what was going on.

  • Not just at the family's behavior, but at how quickly she gave in. Maybe she didn't want the hassle. Maybe she just wanted a peaceful flight.

  • But still, it was one of those moments where you see entitlement meet politeness, and somehow entitlement wins.

  • As rough as this was for the woman who wanted her proper seat, maybe she made the right call. 

    I can't help but think that if she moved into that seat, making the parents feel slighted, they would've retaliated somehow. They would've let their kid crawl all over her, or let the kid drop Cheerios on the ground, or maybe let the kid kick and scream. It would probably be unpleasant for that woman no matter what. 

    Even if you really love kids, you know that they can be unpredictable on flights. Even if your kiddo is usually a little angel, they might flip out during the flight because their ears popped and it's hurting them. You can love kids soooo much, and still be wildly annoyed at the toddler in 6B who won't stop howling. 

    So you know what? This woman didn't get exactly what she paid for. But at least she got the peace and quiet of knowing that the family next to her wasn't staring daggers at her for the entire duration of the flight.
